Another ficlet - something I thought of the other night and it has officially become headcanon. This is my ending. (Please let me know if you like it!)
It was time again for Karin Chakwas to take a trip to Illium for some supplies. It had been a few years since the war with the Reapers, and she still couldn’t believe they had made it. The Reapers were destroyed, everyone and everything was intact, life went on, all at the cost of a dear friend’s life.
"Stop that Karin."
She lectured herself.
"You’re not trying to upset yourself while you’re here."
It was nice to think back to those days when she served with Commander Shepard. She even thought back to the times she’d enjoy a bottle or two of Serrice Ice Brandy with the Commander. What a wonderful woman Shepard was. And the sacrifice she had made? No one could do more than she did. But Shepard wasn’t only the hero of the galaxy, she was a friend to many, and left a lover behind. Karin wished she could see the crew again. They had all become her family, and now they had all gone their separate ways. She strolled through Illium, lost in her nostalgia, when suddenly, a very familiar turian in the distance had caught her eye.
"Is that….Garrus Vakarian?"
No way… it couldn’t be! Just as she reminisces on the past, there’s someone she hasn’t seen for a long time! She worried about Garrus constantly after they lost Shepard. Garrus would often come to her for advice. She even recalled him confiding in her about proposing to Shepard, if that was what she wanted, because he’d be damned if he had to go another day without her. Karin smiled sadly, looking up to make sure it hadn’t been her imagination. Garrus really was there, leaning over a railing, looking at the sight of even more colorful buildings and people going about their way in the streets below. It surely wouldn’t hurt to say hello! As she marched toward the turian, she saw his gaze turn to meet another, and her feet slowed to a stop, observing. A woman with a slight limp walked over to him, and he held his arms out, helping her into them. A brief kiss and then their hands intertwined.
"Well I’ll be…."
He had actually moved on. She wasn’t sure he could. Karin tried to get a look at the woman’s face, but her long, red hair obstructed the view of her visage. Garrus observed the woman, to which Karin guessed he was making sure she was okay. He ran a talon over her face, brushing some of the hair aside, which gave Karin a view of the woman’s cheek, a long scar across it. He traced the scar, kissing her forehead as he continued to chat with the woman.
"I’m so proud of you Garrus…."
Chakwas sighed, feeling like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
Her head turned directly to the source of the noise, a small child running up and wrapping her arms around the redheaded woman, who in turn stumbled forward into Garrus. They laughed, and Garrus scooped the child up into his one arm, nuzzling her face and using the other to hold hands with the woman. As they turned to leave, the woman’s eyes met with Karin’s. Karin felt a pang in her chest. Those brown eyes….she had looked into them before. Those brown eyes belonged to her dear friend Claire Shepard. These were the longest couple of seconds she had ever felt as she studied the woman. Karin took in everything. The woman’s eyes, the scar on her cheek, her build….her hair had changed. It was much longer now, and she had colored it red. Karin couldn’t believe it. As if to confirm her suspicions, the woman smiled sweetly and gave a slight nod, discreetly greeting her. Karin nodded back, grinning. Tears had formed in her eyes as she watched the family go.
She did it….she really did it….and now she was living peacefully as someone else. No doubt she was probably going by Claire Vakarian now.
"Nice seeing you old friend…"
